What exactly is a sod cutter?

A sod cutter is a specialized machine designed for efficiently removing strips of grass from a lawn, ensuring that the roots and a substantial amount of soil are retained. Primarily used to clear grass or weeds from a specific area of landscape, it also serves the purpose of creating strips of sod for transplantation in new areas where the roots can re-establish. The machine typically features a metal roller at its base, facilitating smooth movement over the lawn. Beneath the machine, sharp blades cut through the soil beneath the grass, allowing you to lift the strip away after each cut. Additionally, the adjustable nature of these blades enables the cutting of sod strips in varying thicknesses.

What are the types of sod cutters?

Sod cutters are available in two main types: manual and gas-powered models, each with distinct features:

Manual Sod Cutters:

  • Operated by pushing a horizontal crossbar with your foot to drive the cutting blade into the ground.
  • After the blade cuts through the soil, tip the cutter forward to level it, and then push or kick it forward.
  • Manual sod cutters may encounter challenges if the soil is rocky or uneven, making them less efficient for fast sod cutting.

Gas-Powered Sod Cutters:

  • Powered by an engine, eliminating the need for manual effort.
  • The engine propels the roller, making the sod cutter move, and also drives a cutting blade, moving it back and forth to slice through the grass.
  • Requires minimal effort from the user, as pushing the machine along is the primary task.
